The Mare Island Naval Shipyard, one of the oldest in the US, has seen hundreds of ships built and repaired, many of them using asbestos to insulate on-board piping and prevent fires. And while the asbestos did its job on the ship, it exposed thousands of workers to related diseases, including the cancer mesothelioma.

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard is the largest of its kind in the world, and has built and repaired US Naval ships for as long as it’s been open. Using asbestos as an insulator as was the practice in the construction of most boats throughout the twentieth century the workers at the yard were exposed to elevated risks of the asbestos cancer mesothelioma.
